Wei’s projects mainly focus on the degradation of X-ray contrast media compounds (ICMs) which currently be considered as one of the urgent micropollutants, by means of electrochemical process coupled to microbial technology to achieve a total degradation or a partial degradation but enhancing its biodegradability. Electrochemical processes including the electro-dehalogenation, electro-Fenton, as well as other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However electrochemical processes alone are generally recognized not cost-effective due to large energy input. Base on this background, bioelectrochemical processes such as microbial fuel cell powered AOPs, microbial electrolysis cell aim to cathode electroreduction of micropollutants as a coupling process to treat ICMs.
